The home opener for the Quad Cities Football Club NPSL team will take on historic significance as they host the Blau-Weiss Wiehre Football Club from Freiburg, Germany, at 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, at the Davenport Soccer Complex, 8991 North Division Street, Davenport, Iowa.

Tickets are available on the Quad City Eagles website or at the game. Ticket prices are $7 for Adults, $5 for kids 10-14 and children 9 and under are free with a parent.

This is an unprecedented event as is believed to be the first time the Quad Cities has hosted an international soccer match at this level, according to Eagles General Manager Jeff Varner.

Blau-Weiss Wiehre FC is currently second in their division standings and is trying to gain promotion to the next higher level in the German soccer system.

Promotion is a scenario that many American sports fans are unfamiliar with. In Europe and many other countries, teams have the ability to be promoted to higher level levels by finishing at or near the top of their league. It would be like the River Bandits making it to Double A, Triple A, or even the Major Leagues.

The Freiburg contingent is being hosted by a number of Quad City area families and members of the German American Heritage Center in Davenport, Iowa. The German American Heritage Center highlights the proud German heritage in the Quad Cities and features many exhibits and displays showcasing the plight and triumphant quest of German immigrants to the early QC area.

Miami United brought all but two of their famed international players to Cape Coral Friday night for the 2nd leg of the Everglades Cup Series between them and the Cape Coral Hurricanes. Two weeks ago, the Hurricanes traveled to Miami for leg one of the series on a late Sunday afternoon. The game was scheduled to be played the night before but because of field conflicts, Miami had to ask for the game to be rescheduled until Sunday afternoon. The Hurricanes still made the trip although with a severely depleted roster since many of them had work and school commitments. The highly touted Miami team proceeded to roll up a 6-0 score on the much less experienced, undersized and younger Hurricane squad.

“I was looking forward to this game for two weeks ever since we played them in Miami,” stated Hurricanes General Manager J.P. Terrasi. “We wanted to prove that we could play and had a better squad than we brought over there before. We added a few key players and are starting to get our college recruits in town that we’ve been waiting for. The team we are forming is going to be formidable.”

On Friday night, Miami had brought a similar team that the Hurricanes faced two weeks prior but there wasn’t much the same with the Cape Coral squad at all. Even though the Hurricanes only got three new players in from the dozen or so that they are expecting back from college, everything looked and felt different about the team even leading up to the opening kickoff.

From the opening kick, the Hurricanes squad rallied and played with more heart and determination than their age and experience showed on paper. Two of the newest members to the Hurricane’s squad, Cody Antonini and Nick Murawski, took charge and made an immediate impact. There was gritty play from the start, as the veteran Hurricane players worked with their newer members and took it straight to Miami. The Hurricanes dominated time of possession in the first half and also played well off the counter as was showed by the team’s first goal. Davian Cranston took a good midfield pass down the left side and had a great cross where Antonini was finishing his run and tucked it home for the first score of the game.

The second goal came just over ten minutes later as the Hurricanes, who were really starting to play well together, had a string of successful good passes that was started by Murawski in midfield and he also ended it after completing his left-sided run where he slammed the ball home cross-corner past the goalkeeper. The growing Hurricanes crowd erupted in cheers as their home team went up 2-0 over the much acclaimed Miami United squad.

The Hurricanes continued to press, but the Miami United team got their shots in as well after that and could have went on the board a few times if it weren’t for some excellent shot stopping from Cape Coral goalkeeper John Damasco.

As the Hurricanes have done before, they had a momentary lapse of defense right at the end of the first half. That brief moment though allowed Miami to get on the board with a well placed corner kick and subsequent scramble in front of the net. Stefan Diopp was in the right place at the right time, as he popped the ball past the Hurricane keeper with less than 20 seconds to go in stoppage. The halftime score was Cape Coral Hurricanes 2, Miami United 1.

The second half started much like the first half with the Hurricanes coming out and pressing the play. They outshot the Miami team in both halves 14 to 12 but the Hurricanes had four shots that could have easily doubled the score. Each team made substitutions and play went back and forth through the remainder of the game until the final possession when Miami had backed up the Hurricanes deep into their zone.

Miami was knocking on the door when one of their players went down easily just outside of the box forcing a free kick. The Miami player stepped up and drove the ball over the Hurricane wall and hit the underside of the crossbar in the top left corner. The ball ricocheted and fell just over the line for the game’s final goal. Although the game ended in a 2-2 tie, the Miami team got much more than they were hoping as the younger Hurricanes played very hard and well together throughout the game.

Even the famed Miami striker Simone Quintieri was impressed with the Hurricanes play at the end of the game.

“They have some good players on their team and I was impressed, especially with their number 14 (forward Antonio Wint),” Quinteri stated. “He was good.”

Zanesville Athletic FC is pleased to announce another wave of signings for the 2013 season. Four players born and raised in Ohio are joined by a group of players with international experience, who are working toward their college degrees here in the United States.

Alec Ferrell will be a sophomore at Wake Forest University in North Carolina in the fall. A Westlake High School alum, Ferrell was able to garner multiple All-Conference and All-Region awards, concluding his senior year with a 2nd Team All-Ohio award. Ferrell has started this spring for Wake Forest as he competes for a starting position and they look to build on their 11-4-5 record from 2012. Wake Forest was able to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference while also playing in the NCAA Tournament.

Michael Lambeck comes to ZAFC after spending a season as the goalkeeping coach for the University of Akron’s Women team. Before stepping into the coaching ranks, Lambeck enjoyed a successful career at Wittenberg University, where he was a four-year starter for the Tigers. He earned All-Ohio honors twice and First Team All-NCAC his senior year. Additionally, Lambeck earned All-State distinction from the Ohio High School Athletic Association while at Dublin Coffman HS.

Kyle Ripma has been the starting goalkeeper for the past two seasons at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio. He is a native of Brecksville, Ohio, and earned All-State and All-Conference Honors while at Brush High School. Otterbein has increased their win totals each of the last two seasons since Ripma was named starter.

Andres Palacios, a sophomore from Bluefield College in Virginia, has signed on with ZAFC. A native of Bogota, Columbia, Palacios played club soccer with Club Deportivo Atlantic before joining the Bluefield Rams in 2011. In 2012, Palacios started 17 games while tallying 3 goals and 1 assist. Most recently, the Bluefield Rams, led by Palacios, were able to defeat NCAA Division I member Longwood University in a spring match.

"Andres is a special player with great technical ability for the game," former Bluefield head coach Chase Neidig stated. "He has a load of experience at the international level having played in the top amateur division in Columbia before coming to the U.S. to play for Bluefield College in the NAIA. He has one of the most warming personalities I have ever coached, always willing to improve and learn more about the game."

"I believe Andres will be a great asset to Zanesville, just as he has been for Bluefield because of his ability to get forward into the attack," Neidig added. "Whether he is playing as an outside back or outside midfielder, he become a player who can become another threat moving forward into the final third."

A native of Johnstown, Ohio, Joe Carter comes to ZAFC from Urbana University, where he has become an important part of the program, starting 35 of the first 36 games of his college career. He earned First Team All-District and 2nd Team All-State as a senior at Johnstown Monroe High School and won the Ohio South State Cup as a U18 with Team Ohio/Blast FC.

Mikey McLaughlin, joins ZAFC for his second season in the NPSL. McLaughlin spent the 2012 season as a member of fellow Great Lakes side AFC Cleveland. The Ohio Wesleyan University alum is a native of Nottingham, England. In 2011, Ohio Wesleyan University and McLaughlin culminated a 23-2-0 season with an NCAA Division III National Championship.

Daryl Fenton hails from East London, England. A central defender, he spent his youth in the Tottenham Hotspur Academy, and also had a six month spell at Barnet. Fenton currently attends Bethany College (WV), where he started nearly 30 matches over the past two seasons.

George Noubossie has committed to Zanesville Athletic from nearby Wheeling Jesuit University. The Cardinals alum hails from Silver Spring, Maryland. Noubossie helped WJU to an 11-8-0 record in 2012. Noubossie appeared in 15 games while starting 12 to help the Cardinals to a 4th place finish in the strong West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and has earned back-to-back 2nd Team All-Conference honors. Noubossie grew up in Cameroon, and spent time training with Girodins Bordeaux in France before moving to Maryland.

Santa Clarita Storm Downs Flash 2-1

Saturday night at Del Norte High School in San Diego was the scene of a rematch from the 2012 season, where the Storm spoiled a potentially undefeated season for the Flash by beating them in Santa Clarita for the final game of the 2012 season.

This would also the first meeting for these two teams in the 2013 season. The Flash came off a 2-0 road loss to the Orange County Pateadores last week and were hoping for a victory in front of their hometown fans.

However, it was the Storm again who spoiled things for the Flash as the visitors scored two goals in less than 35 minutes.

Striker Andres Bueno landed a brace of goals as he capitalized on chances in front of goal. He needed no more than seven minutes before seeing his first scoring opportunity.

He would score his first goal just twelve minutes later as he received a pass from the right before bending a shot around Flash goalkeeper Nicholas Harpel.

In the 33rd minute, Storm midfielder Alex Harlley carried the ball down the right side about 25 yards out and managed a through pass to Bueno, who quickly slipped it past the reach of an outstretched Harpel for the his second goal on the night. This proved to be the game-winner even as the Flash staged a comeback in the second half.

The Storm’s defense stepped up and turned away many opportunities by San Diego, holding the home side to just one shot on target in the entire first half.

The Flash would put one past Santa Clarita keeper Aaron Perez three minutes into the second half as miscommunication and confusion in front of goal resulted in a score for the hosts. Unfortunately for the Flash, it would be their only goal on the night as Santa Clarita held on to their 2-1 lead for the big win.

The Storm will host FC Hasental at Canyon HS Stadium on Saturday, April 27th. The game has major implications with both clubs at the top half of the table.

Other Results from NPSL Action

Las Vegas Stallions 0, San Diego Boca 0 F

Sonoma County Sol 3, San Francisco Stompers 2 F

Sacramento Gold 2, Real San Jose 1 F

Orange County Pateadores 2, FC Hasental 2 F

This year also marks the second-consecutive year in which all U.S.-based Division I, II and III teams will participate in the tournament proper.

The amount of prize money distributed will also see a substantial increase, with the overall champion earning a total of $250,000.
“Find your passion.”

“Chase your passion with every fiber of your being.”

“Never let anybody outwork you.”

Three pieces of advice from Coach Joe Zakowicz. Three lessons he shares with his players.

Zakowicz is one of the good guys in the American game. Someone of great faith, character, and passion for the sport we all love. He is the mastermind behind both the men’s and women’s soccer programs at Ave Maria University in Florida. He also recently signed on as the head coach of the NPSL’s Cape Coral Hurricanes.

“Joe is an exceptional coach with a vast amount of coaching, administration and leadership experience,” Hurricanes General Manager J.P. Terrasi commented, ”He knows how to build a team and develop players, but more importantly he has strong Christian values and an unwavering faith that will help build strong character in our players as well.”

Zakowicz is a man who has gotten it done at every level. He began his coaching career with the Central Delaware Soccer Association and as an assistant at DIII Wesley College.

The early days were instrumental in growing Zakowicz as a coach and a supporter.

“It was a tremendous amount of fun and it fed my passion.” A passion that would last a lifetime.

Zakowicz would spend first two years as a head coach at Oklahoma Wesleyan University before building a powerhouse of a program at Bethel University in Tennessee. One of his former players, Melvin Belong, won the NAIA National Championship there in 2008 as the men’s head coach.

Yes, his former players and assistants have gone on to big things. Over a dozen moved on to become college coaches. So you can see he has made an impact, a big one.

Zakowicz would go on to coach and serve as Athletic Director at Mid-Continent University, where he led the men’s squad to an impressive 142-64-18 record from 2000-2009. He would garner a lifetime of personal hardware at MCU, including the NCCAA National Coach of the Year award.

Zakowicz even started and ran his own youth club in Western Kentucky called Jackson Purchase Futbol Club. This would be a great opportunity to share his passion with countless others, exposing a new generation of athletes to the beautiful game.

Today Zakowicz is the man with a plan at Ave Maria with 2013 marking his third season at the Florida Catholic university. But nobody said it was going to be easy.

“I came to Ave Maria two years ago, inheriting a 1-15-1 team. It was and still is the biggest challenge of my coaching career.”

But things are looking up for the Gyrenes.

“Our players have shown great growth this spring and we have half a semester yet to train. I am excited for our program and Ave Maria University Soccer. We will win this year!”

College soccer is just one piece of the puzzle for the veteran coach. Helping an expansion NPSL team find its way is also on the agenda. Making the playoffs is a priority, but this veteran coach and mentor knows there is more to life than what happens on a pitch.

“The greater goal is to provide a learning environment in which our players can truly grow in the game and as young men. We hope to have an eternal impact on building young men of character during their time with the Hurricanes. I hope we can truly be about developing the players we have and that they might be able to reach their personal goals in the process. The bottom line is that we develop them well.”

With his history of helping players and coaches reach their goals, there is no doubt that he will develop them well.

And he does all this because he loves the game. It’s not for the money, but rather the intrinsic rewards.

“We all have a million favorite moments that I call ‘hidden paychecks.’ Winning championships, celebrations, seasons all come and go, but the relationships and memories are what is special.”

Here is to Coach Zakowicz and his journey toward even more special soccer memories!

This story originally appeared on ISNSoccer.com as part of the ISN Stars of Coaching Presented by Korrio.
Playing with a starting eleven comprised of mostly backup players, Chivas USA fell 2-1 Tuesday morning to Orange County Pateadores at The Home Depot Center’s Field 6.

The Rojiblancos knocked in their lone goal in the second half on a deflected shot by Marco Delgado. But the visiting side was led by two second-half scores, the first coming on a penalty kick by Leopoldo Morales and the game-winner by Manuel Asprilla.

Because of a change in Chivas USA’s MLS schedule made to accommodate CONCACAF Champions League semifinals, the Red-and-White have a bye week, as their match at Seattle – originally programmed for April 7 – was moved to Sept. 4.

In the sixth minute, a cross by Giovani Casillas from the left side of the box to forward Julio Morales was initially broken up by OC goalkeeper Giovani Hernandez. Morales came back with a follow-up shot but the left-footed attempt sailed over the crossbar. Midfielder Jose Manuel Rivera looked to put the Rojiblancos on the board when he let loose a pair of strikes from inside the box and beyond the arc in the 12th and 16th minute respectively.

But the first attempt was high and Hernandez was able to trap the second. Rivera also looked to set-up his teammates for a potential score. On the next possession after his second strike, Rivera slotted a ball to Casillas inside the box, but the pass was not brought in cleanly and the threat was broken up.

The Goats continued to get into dangerous spots and knock on the goal’s door throughout the first half. In the 20th minute Casillas sent a cross from the left side again to a cutting Morales, but the header attempt by the near post traveled wide. Midfielder Laurent Courtois, also working on the left seam, faked a cross attempt and brought the ball back in, and proceeded to work the ball into the box to get off a strike, but the shot was high in the 33rd minute.

Playing a 40-minute first half, the sides went into half time locked at zero. Orange County broke the scoreless tie in the 45th minute when Morales cashed in a penalty kick awarded to the visiting side after a foul was called inside the box on forward Omar Jasseh a minute earlier to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Rojiblancos evened the score in 63rd when Delgado, working the ball on the right wing, got off a shot from about ten yards out. The shot deflected off a Pateadores defender and went passed Hernandez’s left for the score. The visitors answered right back a minute later on a counter attack on Asprilla’s one-on-one unassisted run on the left wing. Asprilla’s shot from inside the box beat Chivas USA goalkeeper Patrick McLain, who started the second half in goal, to his left for the 2-1 result.

Neither of which, however, could be considered "lucky."

After fairly even early exchanges, RSJ began to take control midway through the first half by keeping quick CDA runs in check. Finally in the 35th minute, Kehoe calmly took advantage of a goalmouth scramble by scoring from close range at an angle.

RSJ sealed the match in the 80th when Mike Dyer sent Kehoe free behind the CDA defense about 25 yards out. That was all the third year RSJ star needed as he clinically finished with a precision shot inside the back post.

"Naturally we are thrilled with starting the new season with a win, especially a road win," said RSJ manager Nick Arellano. "The guys played with a high work rate for the vast majority of the match and were clearly deserving of the three points."

Real San Jose starts their 2013 NPSL home schedule on April 6 at Yerba Buena High School. He adds another dimension to our squad and we know he will help us in our quests of winning the NPSL title this season.”

“It’s an honor to sign and play for Junior Lone Star FC," Conteh added. "It was a very hard decision leaving Trenton FC to join Junior Lone Star FC knowing about the fierce rivalry between the two clubs, but I feel it’s time to do what’s best for me as a player.”

“I have utmost respect for all the players and staff at Trenton FC but I couldn’t pass this opportunity to develop myself and play soccer at the next level.
This year marks U.S. Soccer’s Centennial year and to celebrate the journey U.S. Soccer officials have instituted another national soccer event. On Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-26) U.S. Soccer will hold the Inaugural National Amateur Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina and FC Lehigh Valley United (PA) will compete against the Carolina Dynamo (NC), Croatian Eagles (WI), and Battery Park Gunners (MA) in the quest to raise the newest national championship trophy.

FC Lehigh Valley United Sonic will represent the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) as they were the 2012 National Champions and ranked #1 nationally for all NPSL & PDL teams by U.S. Soccer Report in August of 2012. FCLVU Sonic has emerged as one of the most successful amateur sides in recent history by winning two NPSL National Championships (2008 as the PA Stoners), three NPSL Northeast Conference titles, three trips to the NPSL Championships (2008, 2010, 2012), and will play in their second U.S. Lamar Hunt Open Cup in 2013. FCLVU Sonic is also the top men’s team in a very successful youth club in the Lehigh Valley (Allentown, Bethlehem, & Easton - Pennsylvania) where Greg Ramos, the Director of Soccer Operations, has coached his FCLVU boy’s teams to National Youth Championships.

Sonic head coach Dave Weitzman and General Manager Matt McTish have guided the team since 2009 (2009 competed as PA Stoners) and have posted a 41-4-8 record (35-4-4 as Sonic). In 2012, Sonic went 14-1-1 and only allowed five goals during their championship season – only two of those goals coming in the flow of play. FCLVU Sonic beat the Brooklyn Italians and the New York Red Bulls U-23’s in the Northeast Conference playoffs, 2-0 and 3-2. At the NPSL Championship, Sonic beat the Madison 56ers 2-0 in the semifinals followed by another shutout performance, 1-0, in the Finals versus Chattanooga FC. Goalkeeper Charlie Sales was named NPSL Goalkeeper of the Year. Both Sales and starting centerback Kevin Strunk were named to the U.S. Soccer Report NPSL/PDL Best XI. Sonic has relied heavily on local colleges such as Lehigh University, Muhlenberg College, Lafayette College, East Stroudsburg University, DeSales University, & Moravian College as their pipeline for players such as James Graf, Jordie Ciuffetelli, Ali Famili, Ryan Hess, Cody Antonini, AJ Barnold, Tom Mustac, and Josh Brown. Current and former Sonic players Andy Adlard, Matt Baker, Toric Robinson, Troy Hernandez, and Sam Bishop have had their feet in the professional leagues.

FCLVU Sonic is looking to bring home more hardware to add to their collection as well as representing the Lehigh Valley and the NPSL.

“The players are looking eager to get back on the pitch and are excited to wrap their arms around the challenges of competing not only in the 2013 NPSL season but also in two very distinguished U.S. Soccer National events," Coach Weitzman added. "It’s a wonderful honor for us, FCLVU Sonic, to represent our league, our club, and our community. We know that U.S. Soccer/USASA and our host (Carolina Dynamo) will put on a memorable inaugural championship in Greensboro, NC and we are thrilled to be an integral part of it.”

The Rojiblancos took a two-goal advantage on goals by Miller Bolaños and Jose Correa in the first 31 minutes. The Storm answered back with a Miguel Ibarra score to cut the lead in half, but the Red-and-White would pull away with two unanswered goals by Bolaños and Jose Manuel Rivera, all in the first half.

The Rojiblancos got into dangerous spots in their attacking third from the opening whistle. Shiffman was the captain of VCU’s NCAA tournament team this past fall and believes the new club will allow him to continue to grow.

“I’m looking forward to training over the summer and getting better every day,” Shiffman said. “Because when you train with better players you obviously get better as a player.”

The team will participate in the NPSL, which boasts some of the top collegiate players as well as former professional players. Most importantly, it gives players an opportunity to highlight their talents in front of the Richmond area, a soccer hotbed.

“There’s always been so much talent in Richmond and it’s good to have those people around you to always challenge you to get better,” said Wharton.

It also gives Wharton the opportunity to give back to the organization his father and RVA FC General Manager Greg Simmonds built, Own Touch. With the goal being to develop soccer at all ages in the area and is mostly geared to younger athletes.

“(The younger players) are always looking up to us and it’s good to give back to them and try to help them live out their dreams also,” Wharton said.

Not only will the local athletes be able to train with the local college stars but they can catch them in action in Richmond.

“It’s definitely helpful for the young kids to come out to our games, see us play at this level,” said Shiffman. “It’s a good perspective for them to watch us play, it gives them a little passion and ambition to play in college.”

Though the main goal of the new organization is what has Shiffman and Wharton most excited. Continuing to improve and hopefully make the jump to the professional ranks once their college playing days wrap up.

Learning from former European professional turned RVA FC Coach Grover Gibson is a big incentive.

“I think working with him is an excellent opportunity to teach me how to be a player professionally,” said Shiffman. “He’s like a mentor to me in a way. Because I can learn from anything he tells me.”

For the VCU midfielder those opportunities will come within the year; for Wharton he still has three years in the Cavaliers uniform and hopes to expand his abilities.

“Hopefully I can learn from all the other experienced players on the team, that I can take with me back to UVA and provide some more leadership or a different aspect to the game that I didn’t have last year,” Wharton said.

The club will open their first season in May with a full schedule to be released at a later date.
