SHENANDOAH, TX – What started out as a close match quickly became a rout as the Regals FC rolled past the Galveston Pirate SC 5-1.
Regals FC used four second half goals to turn a 1-1 halftime tie Sunday into the team’s biggest win since June and improve the team’s home record to 2-0 since beginning play at Woodforest Stadium late last month.
“I’m proud of our guys,” Regals FC coach Miguel Landaverde said. “They came out in the second half and played real hard and were able to get the victory.”
The game was a nail-biter early on as the two teams played a closely contested match. Pirate SC broke through first by scoring on a cornerkick but Regals FC would score shortly before halftime on a penalty kick from Eddie Rodriguez.
Despite the tied score Regals FC had more first half opportunities and outshot the Pirate SC 5-2.
After halftime, Regals FC came out on a mission. The team scored four goals within the first 18 minutes and cruised to victory from there.
“I thought we were kind of playing lazy in the first half,” Landaverde said. “We have good players and can play with any team but we can’t play lazy. I wasn’t happy with them at halftime.”
Rodriguez scored his second goal of the game on a long strike from 25 yards out to kickoff the second half scoring fest for Regals FC.
Jose Sibrian score the third Regals FC goal off of a header that squeaked by a diving Pirate SC goalkeeper.
Regals FC would then score two more goals off of breakaways including one from Allen Villa that found the corner of the net and crushing the hopes of any Pirate SC comeback.
“We have a lot of power up front in our forwards,” Landaverde said. “In the second half we showed that power. They were finally hustling to the ball and we were able to play how I like to play. If we can keep doing that and not play lazy, we will be a good team.”
Goalkeepers Jose Contreras and Joel Recinos shared time in the net for Regals FC and combined for three saves in the game.
Regals FC outshot Pirate SC by a total of 12-5 and had three more shots-on-goal – 5-2
